Description

Join New Moon Folk Club for their presentation of Hary Manx & Strathcona String Quartet on Friday, December 5 at St. Basil's Cultural Centre, 10819 71 Avenue NW. Doors open at 6:30PM, performance begins at 7:30PM.

Harry Manx, often called an “essential link” between East and West, masterfully blends the soulful traditions of blues with the intricate depth of Indian classical ragas. Born on the Isle of Man and raised in Canada, Manx’s musical journey took him across Europe, Japan, India, and Brazil. In the mid-80s, he began a transformative five-year tutelage under Rajasthani musician Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, who gifted him the Mohan Veena, a 20-stringed sitar-guitar hybrid that became his signature instrument. This unique fusion of Eastern and Western sounds defines Manx’s “mysticssippi” style, creating a captivating and genre-defying musical experience.
A prolific performer, Manx has toured extensively, enchanting audiences at festivals, theaters, and blues clubs worldwide. His live shows, featuring the Mohan Veena, lap steel, harmonica, and banjo, transport listeners into what fans call “the Harry Zone”—a space where haunting melodies and heartfelt storytelling converge. Manx’s nine albums have earned him seven Maple Blues Awards, five Juno nominations, and accolades from the Canadian Folk Music Awards. His music, a blend of Indian folk, blues, and gospel, continues to resonate deeply with fans, offering a transcendent escape from the everyday.

First Set: Night Warblers

The Night Warblers, an eclectic indie folk trio from the Canadian prairies (Treaty No. 6), craft deeply personal songs exploring motherhood, grief, identity, and belonging. Comprising Susan Isaac (lead vocals, guitar, fiddle, piano), Jessica Nelson (vocals, mandolin, harmonica, percussion), and Keavy Martin (backing vocals, bodhrán), their sound blends three-part harmonies with genre-defying creativity. Known for inventive covers and original tracks like I Didn’t Think to Tell Him and Infinite Colours, they reimagine prairie folk for the 21st century, weaving stories of love, loss, and resilience.
