Description

Join Mill Creek Colliery Band for their presentation of Say Her Name on Saturday, March 9 at 7:30PM at the Old Strathcona Performing Arts Centre, 8426 Gateway Boulevard NW

Join the Mill Creek Colliery Band for their Say Her Name concert in honour of International Women's Day!

The Mill Creek Colliery Band (MCCB) seeks to promote the British brass band tradition in Western Canada, employing all the traditional instruments of that ensemble. The name of the band pays homage to the historical connection between 19th century working class northern England, and the brass bands which flourished during that time. The name also refers to a prominent ravine area in Edmonton, itself the site of important coal mining activity in the early days.

Edmonton’s own 28-piece, British-style brass band is proud to present this wonderful celebration of women in music. We will feature several fine compositions/arrangements by women, including Jason and the Golden Fleece (Elizabeth Raum), Elizabeth Remembered (Debbie Wiseman), Carnival (Helen Perkin), Ravenhill Suite (Dorothy Gates), and Carillon (Carol Thurgood – a member of the MCCB). Two of the many talented ladies in our band will be featured as soloists: Joanna MacDonald (trombone) in Fantasy for Trombone (Elizabeth Raum, arr. Dorothy Gates) and Isye Morland (euphonium) in Journey Home (Lucy Pankhurst). The band will be led by guest conductor, Meijun Chen, and our compere will be Child educator and Congenital Heart Disease advocate, Amy Porter.

The duration of the concert will be 110 minutes, including a 20-minute intermission.

Due to the loud noise of colliery bands, this performance is not recommended for children aged 6 and under.
